Performance work becomes confusing when teams chase a perfect score without understanding what the metrics represent. Core Web Vitals are most useful as signals about real user experience: how quickly meaningful content appears, how responsive the page feels and whether the layout moves unexpectedly.
LCP: make the main content appear sooner
Largest Contentful Paint is often affected by the hero image, large heading area, server response time and render-blocking resources. Start by identifying the actual LCP element on important templates.
Use correctly sized images, preload only truly critical assets and avoid making the browser download large media that is not visible yet.
INP: responsiveness after the page loads
Interaction to Next Paint reflects how quickly a page responds to user interactions. Heavy JavaScript, long main-thread tasks and complicated event handlers can make a page feel slow even when it visually loads quickly.
Break up expensive work, reduce unnecessary scripts and test real interactions such as menus, filters, forms and modal openings.
CLS: prevent unexpected movement
Cumulative Layout Shift becomes noticeable when images, banners, fonts or embedded widgets change size after content has already appeared. Reserve dimensions for media and avoid inserting content above what the user is already reading.
Test templates, not only the homepage
A fast homepage does not guarantee a fast website. Test service pages, blog posts, product pages, checkout steps and any template that loads different scripts or media.
Field data matters
Lab tests are useful for debugging, while field data reflects real users, devices and networks. Use both. A single desktop test on a fast connection can hide problems experienced by mobile visitors.
Prioritize business-critical journeys
Performance work should support the actions that matter: reading, submitting an enquiry, adding to cart, booking or completing checkout. The goal is not an impressive screenshot of a score. The goal is a site that responds quickly when a customer needs it.
