Google Search is changing quickly, but website owners still need a reliable way to understand how Google discovers, indexes and surfaces their pages. Search Console remains central to that job.
In 2026, the useful mindset is not “traditional SEO versus AI search.” It is understanding how technical health, search appearance and user intent work across a broader set of search experiences.
Start with indexing, not impressions
Before analysing performance, confirm that important pages are indexable and canonicalized correctly. Review sitemap coverage, page indexing issues and accidental noindex directives. A beautiful dashboard cannot compensate for a page Google cannot reliably access.
Watch queries for changing intent
AI-powered search encourages people to ask longer and more specific questions. That means query data can reveal not only topics but the problems and decisions behind those topics.
Group related queries by intent: comparison, planning, troubleshooting, buying, implementation or education. That is usually more useful than chasing isolated keywords.
Compare landing pages, not just totals
Look for pages that earn impressions but underperform on clicks, pages that attract high-intent queries and pages that have lost visibility after a content or technical change. Landing-page analysis often provides a clearer action than an account-wide traffic graph.
Treat Search Console as a diagnostic tool
Use it alongside analytics and business outcomes. Search Console tells you what happened before the click. Analytics tells you what happened after it. CRM or sales data tells you whether those visits became valuable.
When those layers are connected, a lower-volume query can be more valuable than a high-volume informational term.
Build a monthly search review
A practical monthly review can cover:
- Indexing and sitemap changes.
- Top landing pages by clicks and impressions.
- High-impression pages with weak click-through rate.
- New query themes and intent patterns.
- Mobile usability and performance concerns.
- Content that needs factual or date updates.
- Qualified leads influenced by organic search.
Search Console is most valuable when it leads to specific actions: improve a page, fix a technical issue, add missing information or build a new resource around an emerging question.
